Three additional fire engines were called and firefighters equipped with breathing apparatus used two hose reels to bring the flames under control.

Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service has now confirmed all the occupants are accounted for, but "a number of cats" have died.

"Firefighters have conducted a thorough search of the property to confirm all persons are accounted for," a spokesman said.

"Unfortunately a number of cats have been found deceased and firefighters administered oxygen therapy to one cat who was found alive."
