Fire crews rescue swan trapped on frozen Stanley Park boating lake

A swan has been rescued by firefighters after it became trapped in ice in Stanley Park yesterday (Wednesday, January 6).

Police were called to the park by concerned members of the public who spotted the swan stuck on the frozen boating lake at around 3pm.

PCSO Anna Morris requested the help of Blackpool and Fleetwood fire crews, who used an inflatable sled to paddle to the swan's rescue.

Firefighters were able to break the ice and free the swan, before bringing it safely ashore and handed into the care of the RSPCA.

The swan is now recovering from its icy ordeal with the animal charity and will soon be returned to its natural habitat in Stanley Park.

PCSO Anna Morris said: "Yesterday afternoon (January 6), the Blackpool South neighbourhood team were called to a Swan trapped in ice on the lake at Stanley Park.

"Our colleagues from Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service did a fantastic job and the swan is now safe and warm with the RSPCA."

A fire service spokesman added: "At 3.17pm on January 6, two fire engines from Blackpool and Fleetwood attended an incident on West Park Drive, Blackpool to reports of a swan stuck in ice on a lake.

"Firefighters rescued the swan from the ice using swift water rescue equipment and a sled. Fire crews were at the scene for approximately two hours."
