Fire crews battle large blaze at farm

Firefighters battled a large blaze on farmland after a small fire spread to a 60 ton stack of railway sleepers, say fire services.

Crews from Preesall and Garstang were alerted to the fire at Brook Farm in Rawcliffe at around 10pm on May 11.

Fire officers arrived to find 25ft high flames covering a 15sq m radius and battled the blaze for more than three hours .

A spokesman for the fire service said: "There was a small garden waste fire which seems to have spread to a large stack of sleepers. The owner of the property called 999 and we turned out. The fire was quite large and we could see it as we approached the farm.

"We used two hose reels and had to ferry water from a fire hydrant some distance away.

"The fire was close to a barn but luckily we managed to stop it spreading and confined it to the railway sleepers.

"If you are having a small fire on your property we would advise you to keep it away from other combustible material and keep an eye on it at all times."

The fire is being treated as accidental.
