Detailed proposals for a residential development on the site of a former social club have been approved by Blackpool Council.

The scheme will see 53 homes build on land on Preston New Road, Marton, where the Co-operative Sports and Social Club stood before it was demolished earlier this year.

The site also includes a football pitch at the rear.

A report by council planners says the land “is a suitable site which can accommodate much needed housing”.

It adds: “Utilising suitable previously developed sites such as this will reduce the pressure on more sensitive green field sites and green belt land in the push to deliver the required level of housing.

“The site is achievable for development as it could deliver housing within the next five years, which would positively contribute to the council’s supply of housing.”

Access to the new development will be from the existing entry point onto Preston New Road.

The scheme will be made up of a mix of two and three bedroomed terraced, semi-detached or detached dwellings, while one property will be a bungalow.

The developer will make financial contributions to a maximum of £259,000 towards affordable housing and playing pitch provision elsewhere.

The Co-op club closed down in 2013 after racking up debts of £42,000 and seeing its membership levels dwindle from around 2,000 in its heyday to just under 300 before it closed.
