Father stole angle grinder from pier

A man seen acting suspiciously under South Pier made off on his bicycle chased by police.

Grant Durnion said he had just been fishing, but he had no tackle on him.

Durnion, a 23-year-old father, of Withnell Road, South Shore, pleaded guilty to theft of an angle-grinder and power lead from South Pier, belonging to Crown Entertainments Centres Ltd.

He was sentenced to a six months community order, ordered to go to an attendance centre for 18 hours and told to pay a £180 court charge with £85 costs plus £60 victims’ surcharge by Blackpool magistrates.

Chrissie Hunt, prosecuting, said a security guard on South Pier saw two men acting suspiciously under the pier on June 24 at 5.45am.

Suzanne Mugford, defending, said Durnion had found the tools.
