Family forced to canoe ashore after boat runs aground

A sailor in her 60s and her grandson were forced to canoe ashore for help when their boat ran aground in the Ribble Estuary.

The woman was sailing with her husband, also in his 60s, and their other grandson when the 18ft open day boat ran aground at around 3pm yesterday.

The pair made their way ashore to raise the alarm.

Lytham lifeboat crews went out to rescue the grandfather, who had back troubles, and the younger child.

The boat had hit a bank on the Ribble estuary opposite the windmill at Lytham.

A spokesman for Liverpool Coastguard said: “Lytham lifeboat went out to bring the crew back to shore.

“The boat was left aground and will be recovered at high tide on this afternoon.”
