A restaurateur has revealed his astonishment after his brother-in-law rang with a special delivery – a gigantic salmon weighing a whopping 30lb.

Patrick Beaume, owner of The Cartford Inn Bar and Restaurant in Little Eccleston, said he was stunned after his brother-in-law, Stuart Hayton, of Midland Fish Company in Fleetwood, rang him to offer a surprisingly large fish caught in the River Ribble.

He said: “Stuart got in touch and said he had a large fish that was rarely caught in these waters for me.

“I wasn’t sure what to expect and I couldn’t believe it when it arrived. I thought it would be a big fish, but never something that size.”

The 30lb monster was reeled in by fisherman Billy McKean, off the coast of Lytham.

The fish is an unusual find, with salmon of its size normally found in protected reserves in Scotland.

Patrick added: “All told it has cost me more than £150.

“I normally buy my salmon from Scotland, where they grow to such a size with the help of being in protected areas, but to reel in something that size off the coast here is truly special.”

A spokesman from fishing specialists Ted Carter and Son in Preston added: “It’s certainly a big fish but there are bigger that have been caught.

“However, it is not a common find in these waters.”

Patrick put the monster catch on the menu at the restaurant on Friday.

And it sold out over the weekend.

He added: “I think it’s great – a local fisherman catching a huge fish and it being supplied to a Fylde restaurant.

“I was delighted to put it on the menu as freshly caught River Ribble salmon.”
