Twenty tonnes of sand needed to be removed from the entrance and interior before work could get underway on renovating the block at North Promenade, St Annes.

The exterior was then given new rendering and a disabled access ramp installed ahead of a full internal re-fit.

Facilities include two unisex toilets, a disabled toilet, baby changing facilities and even a sluice unit for use by visiting motorhomes.

The work cost £84,000, funded through Fylde Council’s capital projects budget, and was carried out by Danfo, who provide toilet facilities on behalf of the council at a variety of locations around the borough, including elsewhere on St Annes seafront close to the bandstand and Fairhaven Road car park.

Danfo will now monitor and maintain the new toilet building, which previously closed in 2006 - and the new facilities have been quick to make an impact with the public, even out of the main tourist season.

“Five people visited the facilities within 20 minutes of them being opened,” said Tracy Morrison, Fylde Council’s director of resources, who attended the official opening with council leader Coun Sue Fazackerley and representatives of Danfo. “All concerned have done a fantastic job on the project and the building works have generated lots positive local interest. The new toilets will be a real asset.”
