Councils like Blackpool should be doing more to help the national football team – by supporting the sport at grassroots level.

That was the call from Coun Maxine Callow who says England’s disappointing performance at the World Cup demonstrates more needs to be done to encourage local talent.

She says Blackpool Council should lead the way by promoting more football at its parks and fields. Coun Callow said: “After watching some of the World Cup, it is clear we have to start growing our own players.

“It is vital as a nation we are not relying on foreign players to fill up the places at Manchester United etc. The World Cup has shown we do not have the talent.”

She added that sports facilities such as those at Stanley Park should be better utilised to encourage more youngsters to play football.
