South Fylde students are to get their own sixth form college from next September.
Lytham Sixth Form College is being founded in a joint venture between Blackpool and The Fylde College (B&FC) and Lytham St Annes High Technology and Performing Arts College (LSAT&PAC).
It is set to be situated at B&FC’s existing Ansdell campus and means 16 to 18-year-olds now have the choice to study closer to home.
Bosses say it will offer high-achieving school leavers the opportunity to study three A Level equivalent BTEC programmes or the A Levels needed to gain entrance to the top universities and graduate careers.
Entry to the Albany Road college will be open to all students, as with any independent sixth form.
Bev Robinson, Principal and Chief Executive of B&FC said: “There are clear synergies between the two organisations.
“B&FC is a Grade 1 Outstanding provider and our vocational, highly skilled expert tutors will complement LSAT&PAC, which is a highly experienced A Level provider with a proven track record.
“In addition to a broad academic curriculum, Lytham Sixth Form College will offer significant opportunities for students across different programmes to work together on undergraduate themes as part of their studies.
“We anticipate that this will better prepare our students for the challenges of higher education in areas including research, critical thinking and the impacts of ICT.”
Philip Wood, headteacher of LSA Technology and Performing Arts College said: “By making broad academic and vocational provision available within the same college we will fully cater for the needs, aspirations and abilities of all post 16 students in the community.
“Combining the expertise of two excellent, existing providers will guarantee high quality education and progression routes for all.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for students in this part of the Fylde.”
This is the first time a dedicated 16-18 campus has existed in the area. Students and parents can find out more about Lytham Sixth Form College on Thursday, December 4, from 6pm to 8pm at an open event to be held at Lytham St Annes Technology and Performing Arts College.
