RNLI volunteers were called out alongside members of the Lytham Coastguard at around 4.30am.

They searched the Irish Sea, close to the Sea Life Centre on the Promenade, for around 50 minutes before judging the call to be a false alarm, a spokesman said.

The RNLI, a charity reliant on donations, launched from its nearby lifeboat station.
