Teams are now working to break up the 6,000 tonnes of concrete which toppled to the ground following Sunday’s leveling of the eight storey structure.

It is expected to take until the end of May before the site on Mythop Road is fully cleared to make way for redevelopment including construction of a new housing estate.

Pete Marquis, whose demolition firm is carrying out the work, said: “It all went really well on Sunday.

“Everything was spot on according to plan. There were no issues with dust and it was a textbook operation.

“The next stage is to break up the rubble and process it for recycling.

“Our machinery will munch through it, cutting the concrete up.

“Once we have cleared all the tower, the other buildings on the site will also be machined down.”

National Savings and Investments (NS&I) has sold the land to Rowland Homes which has planning permission to build 118 homes accessed from Preston New Road.

Around 450 civil servants still work for NS&I on the site, but are now based in the Moorland building which will continue to operate, and which also now houses ERNIE, the computer which selects Premium Bonds winners.

The NS&I site at Mythop Road opened in around 1978, but the tower buildings had been vacant for some time and had fallen into a poor state of repair.
