TWO men had been drinking heavily when they clashed with police, a court was told.

Vincent Ainsworth, 28, of Lime Avenue, Kirkham, admitted obstructing police at a hearing before Blackpool Magistrates.

His friend Francis Cullen, 26, of Preston Street, Kirkham, admitted assaulting a police officer and possession of cannabis.

Magistrates adjourned sentence on Cullen pending the preparation of pre-sentence reports.

Ainsworth was given a conditional discharge for 12 months.

Pam Smith, prosecuting, said officers were called to a house in Kirkham by Cullen’s mother because her son was “kicking off”.

Cullen lost his temper and punched and kicked out at one of the officers.

During the incident Ainsworth became involved and hit the officer on the back.

Malcolm Cartwright, defending Cullen, told the court his client had a drink problem and needed help.
