Drink driver lied to police

A grieving man who had been drinking lied to police saying he had not driven.

Another driver saw Robin Bennett’s car mount the kerb three times and go through a red light.

Bennett, a 49-year-old facilities manager, of Park Road, Blackpool, pleaded guilty to driving with excess alcohol. He was banned from the road for 12 months and fined £120 with £50 costs plus £30 victims’ surcharge by Blackpool magistrates.

Presiding magistrate, Sylvia Kirby, told him: “You were reckless and a danger to the public at a busy time.”

Pam Smith, prosecuting, said a witness saw Bennett driving a Vauxhall Vectra erratically on Preston New Road on May 21 about 6pm

At first, Bennett told police he had not drivenbut later admitted the offence.

Bennett, who had no previous convictions, said shortly before committing the offence his dad had died.
