Drink driver fell asleep at wheel of car

Ian Taylor, 32, of St Andrews Road South, St Annes, pleaded guilty to driving with excess alcohol and having no insurance.

He was banned from the road for 18 months, fined £220 with £85 costs and ordered to pay a £150 court charge plus £22 victims’ surcharge by Blackpool magistrates.

Pam Smith, prosecuting, said police were called to an accident on St Annes Road East, St Annes on April 18 at 4.40am.

Taylor’s car had crossed the road and crashed into a parked car, which was then shunted into another vehicle.

A breath test showed 74 micrograms of alcohol in his body –35 is the limit.

Gerry Coyle, defending, said Taylor had been absolutely honest with the police.

He had admitted having a few drinks after a long hard day at work and unfortunately falling asleep at the wheel.

Taylor’s insurance had been cancelled the previous week by his insurance company when there was not enough money in his account to pay for his policy.
