The rescue tortoise was taken in by St Annes Cat Rescue 12 years ago after his previous owners could no longer care for him.

Now the charity, which closed in March, is seeking a new home for the elderly animal.

Cat Rescue founder Christine Ashton said: “He’s a very strong tortoise. If something’s in his way and he wants to go, he will keep pushing until he’s moved it.

“He’s not aggressive, he won’t attack your feet like some tortoises do, but he takes no prisoners.

“If the cats are in the way, the cats have got to move.”

Dorian Gray, who is believed to have come from an upper-class background, was once a pet for three generations of the same family.

He has already exceeded his life expectancy of 100 years - but is ‘very fit’ and could survive another 15 years with an experienced owner, the centre said.

Anyone who is interested in adopting Dorian Gray can contact Christine by calling (01253) 721268.
