A distressed man was found walking along the hard shoulder of a motorway, say police.

Motorway police were alerted to the man who appeared distressed and had suggested self harm on the M55 at around 1am on Tuesday, August 14.

Officers searched the area and located the man who taken to hospital for treatment.

A spokesman for North West Motorway Police said: "We received a report of a man walking on the hard shoulder of the M55.

"The man appeared distressed and had suggested self harm. Lancs Road Police officers searched the area and located the male.

"He is now receiving the appropriate help at hospital."
