The council's Audit Committee had been due to agree the accounts for the financial year 2017/18 at its last meeting on July 30, but KPMG had refused to sign them off.

It was believed to be the first time this had happened in the authority's history and was due to a procedural issue.

Town hall chiefs made the necessary amendments paving the way for councillors to consider the accounts when the Audit Committee next meets on Thursday September 6.

Coun Paul Galley, chairman of the Audit Committee, said: "I believe they are now going to the September 6 audit meeting where if KPMG have signed them off (I believe they are now in a position to do that) and the committee agrees, we will approve them."

The council said it would not face any sanctions as a result of the delay in getting the accounts finalised.
