Curtain up for true Heroes!

A production of a Nobel Prize winning play proved so popular on its first run it is set for a second run, this time to raise funds for Hospice Heroes.

Centre Stage Theatre Company staged John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men at Lowther Pavilion to sell out audiences in August last year.

Now they are set to return to the Lytham theatre for an extra three shows targeted at school audiences, with profits from one show set to be donated to Brian House children’s hospice.

Directors decided to run the play again for children, staging daytime performances, to fit in with study of the story in school curriculums.

And they hope to raise more than £1,000 for The Gazette’s Hospice Heroes campaign to help children in another way at Brian House.

Chris Campbell, co-founder of the theatre company, said: “We feel we can use theatre to help young people develop and understand Of Mice and Men, as well as raise awareness and funds for charity.

“It’s extremely sad when you think what Brian House is there for but it does a fantastic job helping young people.

“To be able to produce theatre and help that little bit, to help develop their rooms and make them better, it’s something we’re very passionate about.

“It’s definitely a good cause.”

The Hospice Heroes campaign is aiming to raise £200,000 for the palliative care units on Low Moor Road, Bispham, to help fund a massive redevelopment of the facilities.

It will be put together with a £280,000 grant from the Department of Health to create single-occupancy rooms in the adult unit and make the children’s area brighter and safer.

Of Mice and Men plays four performances at Lowther Pavilion on February 10 and 11, starting at 10am and 1pm. An evening performance will be staged at 7.30pm on February 12, the proceeds of which will be donated to Hospice Heroes.

The play, originally a novella written by John Steinbeck, follows George Milton and Lennie Small as they travel and dream of living ‘off the fat of the land’, but tragedy befalls them and the dream is shattered.
