The cult musical horror comedy will run at the venue from Monday, September 26 to Saturday October 1.

Winter Gardens managing director Michael Williams said: “This is a great show for the Opera House and Blackpool as a whole as it has such wide appeal.

“The Rocky Horror is synonymous with people dressing up and having a fun night out and I expect we will see some very interesting people in the audience when the show opens in September.”

Since its first appearance at the Royal Court Theatre on 19 June 1973, Richard O’Brien’s Rocky Horror Show has become the world’s favourite Rock N’ Roll musical.

The Rocky Horror Show tells the story of Brad and his fiancée Janet, two squeaky clean college kids who meet Dr Frank’n’Furter by chance when their car breaks down outside his house whilst on their way to visit their former college professor.

It is an adventure they’ll never forget, with fun, frolics, frocks, and frivolity, bursting with timeless songs and outrageous outfits.

The Rocky Horror Show combines science-fiction, horror, comedy and music and encourages audience participation.

Ever since its first performance audience members have attended in fancy dress armed with props like water pistols and confetti.

It has been performed worldwide for more 40 years in more than 30 countries and has been translated into more than 20 languages.

Director Christopher Luscombe has created a new production to celebrate the 40th Anniversary and this critically acclaimed version of the classic show is back by popular demand.

Including songs such as Sweet Transvestite, Damn it Janet, and of course, the pelvic-thrusting Time Warp, Richard O’Brien’s Rocky Horror Show has been a stage favourite for four decades.

A film – The Rocky Horror Picture Show – released in 1975 starred Tim Curry in the main role alongside Meatloaf and a your Susan Sarandon.
