Village to pay tribute to much loved councillor and former Blackpool police sergeant

Villagers in Staining are set to say a final farewell to a former Blackpool police officer and serving parish councillor.

Keith Shuck, who had been a Staining Parish Councillor for 10 years, died on April 23 from a heart attack.

Councillors, retired police officers and residents will form a social-distanced guard of honour on Chain Lane as he is taken from his home to St Luke’s Churchon Wednesday at 1pm.

From there the funeral director will walk ahead of the funeral party through the village with two police motorcyclists, past the Plough Inn, Staining Golf course and the Village Hall. The funeral party will then continue to Lytham Crematorium for a 2pm service.

Keith, 79, served in Blackpool throughout his police career from 1964 to 1995, being promoted to sergeant in 1979.

He was a traffic officer riding police motorcycles and he supported local safe driving groups such as Blackpool Safe Driving Association.

On retirement he became an examiner for the Institute of Advanced Motorists for 30 years, testing more than 1,000 candidates in cars, on bikes, coaches and large goods vehicles.

He and wife Ruth had one son Darrell who also joined the police force, becoming a sergeant and being posted to the Blackpool division.

John Singleton, Fylde Borough Councillor for Staining and Weeton Villages said Keith was chairman of the parish council for the 2015/16 municipal year during which time he visited many other villages along with his wife, Ruth. He added that Keith was a valued member of the council and was a good friend.

He was also a keen golfer and a member at the De Vere Heron’s Reach, where he at one time served as men’s captain.

Coun John Singleton said: “Whoever you ask they will speak of Keith as bring a true gentleman and a lovely guy

through and through.

“He will be sorely missed by his devoted wife, Ruth, their dog, Tyson and all who knew him.

“Keith was the council’s Vexillologist and helped design the Staining Village Flag. Keith arranged for three flagpoles to be erected in the Village and changed the flags on those flagpoles for the 41 different flag flying dates during the year.

"He also liaised with Fylde Council for road closures for Remembrance Day and Civic Sunday Processions. He will be greatly missed by fellow councillors, residents and his family.”
