Vandalised car '˜write off'

Laura Davies, 23, from Thornton says her mother has been left fuming by the actions of the late night raiders.

The turquoise Vauxhall Corsa was parked at flats off Lawson’s Road on the night of June 7 when the vandals struck.

They smashed the driver’s side passenger window, broke the indicator stalks and caused damage to the engine.

Glass was left scattered all over the back seat of the car by the unsuccessful thieves.

Laura, of Brookfield Road, was left frustrated by the police response to the incident, which caused damage in excess of the value of the car.

She said: “It was a horrible thing to find and it’s not only my mum that had been targeted.

“They’ve made such a mess. The back window was smashed, they’ve tried to jump start the engine.

“The damage is so bad the car won’t even start. The central locking has been completely bust. There’s glass everywhere.

“We’ve been trying to pick it off the back seat but it’s an impossible task. It’s never going to all come out.

“The car is at the garage at the moment but the worry is it’s going to cost so much to repair it’s not worth it.

“These thieves have made the car a write off.

“Right now my mum doesn’t have her car. She is absolutely stuck. I’m trying to sort her on my insurance. But all of this might take weeks to sort out.”

Laura, who said her mother didn’t wish to be named, was frustrated with Lancashire Police over its response.

“They said they couldn’t send anybody straight away.

“We had to leave the car out in the open with the windows all smashed in while we waited for them. Somebody eventually came at one in the afternoon.

“By then I’d had to ring them three times.”

Eventually officers did retrieve evidence from the Corsa and told Laura the age of the car may have made it vulnerable.

She said “ The police said criminals were tending to target older vehicles because the alarms might not go off or it might be a little easier to take.”

Lancashire Police confirmed officers had responded to reports of damage to a car off Lawson’s Road.

It was one of three reported incidents in the Thornton and Cleveleys area within a 24- hour period.

And PCSO Mike Duff urged residents to remain vigilant.

He said: “Please can people remain vigilant and make sure their vehicles are locked and secured when necessary.

“We have had three reports of vehicles being tampered with and broken into during the night of June 7 and June 8.

“If you do see anything suspicious please call us via 101 or 999 if a crime is in progress.”
