A MAN stole almost £1,000 from his girlfriend on Valentine’s Day.

Michael Mitchell took his partner’s bank card and squandered the money at a bookmakers.

Mitchell, a 20-year-old bar worker, of Alexandria Drive, St Annes, pleaded guilty to theft from his ex when he appeared before Blackpool Magistrates Court.

Sandra Ardern, prosecuting, said the couple were in a relationship to the extent the victim was considering letting Mitchell move in with her. But on February 14, she woke up to find Mitchell had left her address.

He returned about noon and said he had been “Stocking up.”

The prosecutor added: “He had taken her bank card, gone to William Hill bookmakers and squandered her money.

“When the victim checked her account, she found £980 missing.”

Mitchell, who had no previous convictions, said: “I regret what I have done.

“It was an act of pure stupidity.

“It was the longest relationship I had been in, but I tried to end it a few days before this happened.

“I cannot explain why I did it.

“I really just want to pay her back and I have already paid back £200.”

Mitchell was given a 12 months conditional discharge, fined £100 with £50 costs and ordered to pay £780 compensation plus a £15 victims’ charge.
