Alisha Mackay, 16, was left lying helplessly in the road after being hit by a dark coloured saloon car that sped off without stopping – sparking an urgent police manhunt.

Her furious dad Anthony Bates today told The Gazette: “She’s lucky to be alive.”

Alisha was walking home from work at the Layton Rakes pub in Market Street when she was hit crossing Bloomfield Road at the junction with Ansdell Road at around 7pm on Saturday.

Witness Casey Fearnley, 17, was walking nearby when she saw the car – which she believes was an Audi A3 – come tearing around the corner.

“It went round into the middle of the road where Alisha was,” she said.

“It sounded like she hit the bonnet and then she went into the side of the road. I heard the noise from across the road.

“But the car didn’t even stop, it just carried on.”

Casey, who knows Alisha but didn’t recognise her until she got closer, helped care for her, alongside several other passers-by, until the emergency services arrived.

“She was conscious but she couldn’t move any part of her body from her waist down,” she said.

And Anthony, whose Facebook post calling on witnesses to come forward has been shared hundreds of times, added. “She flew up in the air and spun, and the car just sped off and left her. She can’t get out of bed or walk. She’s in pain.”

Sgt Finn Quainton, of Lancashire Police, yesterday appealed for the car’s driver, who fled towards the Prom, to hand themselves in.

He added: “We would like to hear from anyone who witnessed the incident, or has seen a vehicle in the vicinity at the time of the collision, to contact us.

“Furthermore, if you have seen a vehicle of this description with front end collision damage, call officers.

Witnesses to the collision, as well as anybody with information about the damaged car or its owner, have been asked to call police on 101, quoting log number 1137 of February 11.
