A man stole a television from a supermarket by taking it out of a fire escape door.

A store worker tried to stop Stuart Hilton as he carried the 32-inch flatscreen out but he got into a waiting car which drove off.

Hilton, 40, of Bute Avenue, North Shore, pleaded guilty to theft and breaching a 12 months conditional discharge imposed for possessing class C drugs.

He was sentenced to 12 months supervision with nine months drug rehabilitation and ordered to pay £200 compensation by Blackpool magistrates.

Julie Reilly, prosecuting, said Hilton was seen on CCTV taking the £399 television from Asda, Cherry Tree Road on May 30.

Hilton told police he was going to sell the TV because he had no money or food.

Robert Castle, defending, asked magistrates to read pre-sentence reports on his client.
