"They had been trying to save a tourist, Alistair Anthony, who had gone into the Irish Sea in order to rescue his pet dog.

"The three officers entered the sea close to Gynn Square, but they were soon overcome by the strong tide, waves and freezing water.

"The tourist Alistair Anthony was on a trip to the resort from Glasgow and also died at sea.

"PC Pat Abram was the fourth officer who went into the sea, but was lucky to be rescued by colleagues.

"They managed to throw a rope around his neck and pull him out of the sea, where he was given life-saving mouth-to-mouth resuscitation on the Promenade.

"Sadly this year there will be no gathering at Gynn Square. Wreaths will be laid in memory of those involved from Lancashire Police, amongst others paying tribute.

"May all those involved Rest in Peace and always be remembered."
