A builder was caught drink-driving in his Transit van after an anonymous tip-off to police.

Trevor Smith, 47, of Ennerdale Road, Mereside, pleaded guilty to driving with excess alcohol.

He was banned from the road for 12 months, fined £100 with £85 costs and ordered to pay a £150 court charge with £20 victims’ surcharge by Blackpool magistrates.

Prosecutor, Jim Mowbray, said police received information that at about 7.20pm a man was going to get into a van and drive after drinking in Ma Kellys pub, South Shore on November 10. The informant gave the van’s number plate and police kept observations on it. Smith got in the van and drove off along Lytham Road. He was stopped and a breath test showed 41 microgrammes of alcohol - 35 is the limit.

Brett Chappell, defending, said Smith would now lose his job as he would be unable to drive to his work in Manchester.
