A "distressed" teenager, armed with a knife, has been arrested after he allegedly threatened to burn his care home down in Blackpool, say police.

Officers say they were called to the home in Central Blackpool at around 2.30am on Friday following reports that the 17-year-old had barricaded himself in a room armed with a knife and an axe.

Police quickly attended the scene and found the teenager, who was described by officers as "distressed", had a small Stanley knife.

A spokesman for Lancashire police said: "We attended a residential care home in Blackpool following reports of a male having barricaded himself in a room armed with a knife and axe making threats to burn the property down.

"This was a difficult situation brought to a swift and peaceful end using negotiation skills. The teenager was given help."

The teenager, from Blackpool, has been arrested on suspicion of causing criminal damage.
