Kathryn Jamieson-Sinclair, defending, said: “He would say there was a background to what took place. He maintains she struck him. When interviewed he said he was desperately ashamed of himself.”

Thornton was bailed to appear for sentence at Preston Crown Court on March 2 by District Judge Jeff Brailsford at Blackpool Magistrates’ Court. He must not contact the complainant and must live at his given address.
