A thief who got stranded in Blackpool stole a bottle of whisky from a shop in the resort.

Michael Bates, 20, of The Sheddings, Bolton, pleaded guilty to theft.

He was given an absolute discharge by District Judge Margaret McCormack sitting at Blackpool Magistrates’ Court.

Martine Connah, prosecuting, said that on November 26, at 2.15pm, a CCTV operator at Marks and Spencer saw Bates take the security tag off a £25 bottle of Jack Daniels and concealed it in his pocket.

Steven Townley, defending, said Bates had come to the resort but then got stranded because he had no money to return home.
