A GYM enthusiast who had used steroids before attacking his girlfriend has avoided being jailed.

Craig Briggs, a 26-year-old supermarket team leader, of St Martins Road, South Shore, pleaded guilty to assaulting mother-of-two Julie Wardrope.

Magistrates were told Briggs became jealous when he found out a work colleague he disliked had gone out with his girlfriend before he met her.

On July 4 Briggs shouted and screamed at his girlfriend calling her rude names. He jumped on her, holding her down with his forearm across her face. He then ripped off her jeans to just above her knees.

Briggs had a previous conviction for assaulting his girlfriend. John McLaren, defending, said Briggs had previously taken performance enhancing steroid drugs when he went to a gym. The couple had been under pressure because of debts and on this day Briggs just blew.

He was sentenced to 12 months supervision and ordered to pay £85 costs by Blackpool magistrates.
