'Sorry' from young farmer who sparked fury by jumping on ambulance

Shocked emergency service workers filmed the woman running up the rapid response car's windscreen and trampling on top of it, causing more than £1,000 of damage, in Talbot Road, during last month's Young Farmers event.

Today, ambulance bosses said the woman, who has not been named, sent a letter of apology, and a cheque for £1,114.08, to North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) sector manager Dave Rigby.

She wrote: "I am truly sorry for my spur of the moment reckless behaviour and am very regretful for my actions.

"I sincerely hope that you will accept this letter of apology, which I extend to you and your colleagues, and the enclosed cheque ... to cover the repair costs.

"I am very grateful for your understanding on this whole situation and am very thankful that this matter will now be brought to a close.

"I know and respect what a fantastic job the ambulance service provides and long may it continue."

In a statement released by NWAS, Mr Rigby said: "I was pleased to receive the letter of apology, and would like to give credit where it’s due to the young farmer who has taken responsibility for her reckless actions, said sorry and paid for the damage.”

Repairs to the vehicle will take a week to complete, NWAS added.

It is not yet known whether the woman came forward on her own or was traced by police investigating the incident, which happened on Sunday, May 8.

Officers were also called in after a five-year-old disabled boy's bike was stolen from Market Street, in the town centre, by two female young farmers at around 8.40pm on the same day.

It was later returned after being found in Somerset.

A National Federation of Young Farmers' Clubs condemned their actions.

A spokesman said: "This level of behaviour is not reflective of our federation and has tarnished the reputation of the members who did attend our annual convention - the vast majority of whom behaved impeccably."
