A man set his dog on police after he drank two crates of lager and crashed his mother’s car.

Luke Gillett had taken his mum’s Motability car without asking and smashed it into a pub wall in Whitegate Drive, Blackpool while he was more than three times over the alcohol limit.

He then repeatedly urged his Staffordshire bull terrier to “attack and bite” two police officers trying to arrest him.

Gillett, 24, of Ambleside Road, Mereside, admitted the aggravated taking of a vehicle, driving without insurance while unfit through drink and resisting arrest.

He was sentenced to 18 weeks in prison suspended for 12 months with up to 30 days’ rehabilitation to be supervised by the probation service, ordered to do 240 hours’ unpaid work for the community, banned from driving for three years and told to pay £520 compensation plus a £150 court charge by Blackpool magistrates.
