A soldier accused of murdering a Blackpool corporal found dead at his barracks has appeared in court.

Lance Corporal Richard Farrell spoke only to confirm his identity and that he understood the proceedings taking place today at Wolverhampton Crown Court.

Farrell, 23, a serving soldier with the First Battalion The Royal Irish Regiment, is accused of killing Corporal Geoffrey McNeill, 32, after he was found dead in an accommodation block at Clive Barracks in Tern Hill, Shropshire, on Saturday March 8.

Farrell, of Clive Barracks near Market Drayton, sat in the court dock, wearing a dark blue sweater and trousers and sporting short, dark hair.

At the conclusion of the brief hearing, Judge John Warner adjourned the case to be heard again at Stafford Crown Court on Wednesday, March 26.
