Security is being stepped up at the Tower, Tower Dungeon, Sealife Centre, and Madame Tussauds, Kate Shane from Merlin, which runs the attractions, said.

The 'security presence' at Blackpool Pleasure Beach has also been increased.

It comes after Monday's terror attack in Manchester, which killed 22 people, and the government's decision to raise the country's threat level to 'critical' last night, which means a further atrocity could happen at any moment.

However, the fresh security steps have been introduced as a precautionary measure, and there has been no indication the resort is a target.

Kate said: "The safety of our guests and staff is our number one priority."

All Merlin attractions will now have full bag checks, having previously picked visitors out at random, she added.

Thirty per cent extra security staff have also been drafted in to help protect visitors to the 11-day Blackpool Dance Festival, which started at the Winter Gardens yesterday.

There will also be increased bag checks and increased patrols, a spokesman said.

A spokesman for the Pleasure Beach added: "Blackpool Pleasure Beach has operated airport style security scanners and bag checks at our main entrance for over 10 years.

"We also operate a highly visible security team across the 42 acre site.
