The Lancaster man has now been released under investigation – after being re-arrested on drugs charges.

He was held after a red Skoda Fabia ploughed through the green fencing at Devonshire Primary Academy, in Caunce Street, minutes after dinnertime on Friday, the force said.

No children were out at the time, the school said, and nobody was hurt in the crash, which happened at around 1.10pm.

Nicola Horabin, Devonshire’s assistant headteacher, confirmed nobody at the school was injured – with parents told immediately.

“We did text all the parents to say nobody had been injured because parents got to hear straight away,” she said.

“We stopped anyone going outside from that moment for safety reasons.”

Mrs Horabin said the car ended up in the middle of the playground used by youngsters in years one to six. Pictures showed people gathered around the car, while a man was put in the back of a police van.

The gates, which have been damaged, were secured, with a new one already ordered and set to be fitted this week.

Pupils were able to play outside as usual today, it was understood.

Lancashire Police said the 30-year-old was arrested on suspicion of drink driving. He was questioned before being released under investigation.

A spokeswoman this afternoon said he was further arrested on suspicion of possessing class A drugs ‘and also class B/C’ drugs.
