A PROFESSIONAL rugby player headbutted a doorman who refused him entry to a bar.

Matthew Betty, 24, of Keith Grove, Cleveleys, admitted assaulting the man at Bar Nineteen in Queen Street, Blackpool.

Rossall School old boy Betty was formerly with Premiership club Gloucester has recently been playing in Spain, Blackpool magistrates were told.

Martine Connah, prosecuting, told the hearing Betty was with six or seven friends when they arrived at the bar .

She said: “They were not allowed in the bar and Mr Herdman put his arms out to stop them getting in.

“It was then Betty headbutted him in the face.

“Betty ran off but was chased by a member of the doorstaff and was arrested by police.”

Martin Hillson defending, said: “This young man is a professional rugby union player and has been playing in Spain but is back in the UK.

“He does not ordinarily drink to excess because of his work.

“He went out that night with friends because one of them had split up from his girlfriend.”

He was fined £500 and ordered to pay the victim £150 compensation and £100 costs.
