Fylde MP Mark Menzies met with a leading member of the Jewish community to discuss concerns over a rise in anti-Semitism.

The Member of Parliament met Marc Levy, North West external affairs manager for the Jewish Leadership Council, in Lytham, to discuss a range of issues.

Anyone who has visited the concentration camps at Auschwitz-Birkenau will tell you what this kind of intolerance can lead to and I know the Government takes these issues extremely seriously

Following the meeting, Mr Menzies said: “As someone who is a member of the Conservative Friends of Israel, I abhor anti-Semitism in all its forms. While I do have concerns over areas of Israel’s foreign policy – issues I am well-aware of due to my position on the Conservative Middle East Council and having visited Gaza and the West Bank – I do not condone anyone who uses those problems to excuse their racist ideologies.

“I have been aware of a rise in anti-Semitism in Britain for some time, and have been especially concerned about the issue due to the large numbers of Jewish people who live in Fylde. Coupled with that, some of the views we have seen expressed recently from the leaders of groups in our neighbouring European countries have been outright racist.

“However, to hear from Marc that Jewish students were being targeted with anti-Semitic comments on British university campuses was truly shocking and an issue which needs to be stamped out.
