A ‘blood-spattered riot shield’ was seen being carried out of a Blackpool flat following a dramatic siege earlier today.

Witnesses described several police vehicles, including riot vans, pulling up outside Barry Holiday Flats on the Prom at around 11.20pm.

Officers were answering a complaint from a female resident there about criminal damage when a man, believed to also live in the flats, barricaded himself inside one of them and refused to come out, police said.

They ‘popped the lock’ after the man punched and smashed a window, cutting his hand open, a force spokesman added.

One man, who lives nearby, said he counted around 10 police vehicles, and said officers were seen carrying bloodied riot shields afterwards.

A spokeswoman for the North West Ambulance Service confirmed paramedics were called to the scene at 12.19pm, but said they were unable to comment further because the incident took place at a private address.

A 35-year-old man was later detained.
