A MAN wished a pub customer a Happy New Year then without warning punched him in the mouth.

Christopher Coates, 31, of South Avenue, Cleveleys, pleaded guilty to assaulting Gregory Tait.

He was fined £290 with £85 costs and ordered to pay compensation of £400 to his victim plus £29 victims’ surcharge by Blackpool magistrates.

Tracy Yates, prosecuting, said the victim was in the Bull Hotel, Poulton on January 11 at 4pm, when Coates came in, wished him Happy New Year and then punched him in the mouth.

The victim had a false front tooth knocked out and suffered cuts to the inside of his mouth plus a sore nose.

Allan Cobain, defending, said the victim had previously had drinks at Coates’ home and the defendant believed he had “come on” to his girlfriend. Coates later asked for an apology but the victim refused to give one.

Coates felt ashamed of his behaviour.
