A man described as one of Blackpool’s prolific shoplifters has been jailed for 116 days.

Martin Harrison, 49, formerly of Talbot Road admitted stealing lager from Asda.

He also admitted stealing cider from a Co-op shop in the resort.

Jackie Garrett, prosecuting, told Blackpool Magistrates Court that Harrison had a long record of offending and when confronted by police about the thefts said he had no means to pay for the alcohol.

She said: “This man is one of the prolific shoplifters in Blackpool and has already served one prison sentence for these type of offences.”

Michael Woosnam, defending, said his client was now homeless but Blackpool Council had given him some hope of getting a roof over his head at a centre on Cookson Street.

The lawyer added: “My client is lonely man who takes solace in drink.”
