Investigations are continuing today into an altercation which led to a siege lasting more than an hour involving a man on a pub roof.

Armed police surrounded the Devonshire Arms pub, on the corner of Devonshire Road and Warley Road, leaving more than 100 customers locked inside for their own safety.

A 21-year-old, from Blackpool, was arrested in the smoking area of the pub after the standoff before being questioned on suspicion of affray in relation to an earlier incident in Bedford Road, North Shore. He has been bailed until September pending further inquiries.

Insp Steve Bell, from Blackpool Police, said: “There was some sort of disturbance at an address in Bedford Road which we treated as a public order incident. We then wanted to speak to an individual who had left the scene, and we located him shortly after.

“There were some concerns about his wellbeing and demeanour.”

The man was unarmed when he was captured by the police, but detectives are still trying to establish whether he may have been carrying a weapon earlier in the evening.

Insp Bell added: “That hasn’t been confirmed whether the male may have been in possession of some kind of weapon.”

A section of Devonshire Road, North Shore, was closed off while the drama unfolded on Friday evening. and children playing nearby were also ushered into the pub for their own safety.

One eyewitness who did not want to be named, said: “He jumped on the fire escape and basically ran up it until he got on the roof.

“We were all sat in the back having a pint when the police turned up and cordoned it off.”
