A man was dubbed the cheekiest criminal in custody – after he was caught smoking heroin in his cell.

Detention officers became suspicious when they saw smoke coming out of cell 22 at Blackpool Central police station.

Inside Carl Rainford was smoking heroin and when he was searched five other packets of the drug were found hidden on his person.

Rainford, 40, formerly of Empire House, Preston, now living at Reads Avenue, Blackpool, pleaded guilty to possessing heroin and theft from a shop.

He was bailed for pre-sentence reports and will be sentenced at a later date by Blackpool magistrates.

Philip Potter, prosecuting, said smoke was seen coming from Rainford’s cell at the police station on August 14.

James Ball, defending, said Rainford, who appeared in court on crutches, was in extreme pain after almost dying from an infection in his hip three years ago.

Rainford was in and out of hospital and had resorted to smoking heroin to relieve the pain.
