A pregnant woman turned to shoplifting because she had no money and was desperate to eat.

Emma Lawler, 24, of Clifford Road, North Shore, pleaded guilty to theft.

She was given a 12 months conditional discharge and ordered to pay £85 costs by Deputy District Judge Andrew Jebb sitting at Blackpool Magistrates’ Court.

Tracy Yates, prosecuting, said Lawler stole £70 worth of food from Sainsburys on November 11.

The defendant told police she was on a drug rehabilitation course, but was still topping up on street heroin.

Imran Majid, defending, said his client had been desperate as she was five months pregnant, had no money and had not known when she would be eating next.
