POLICE are hunting a man who raped a young woman at knifepoint.

The 21-year-old was walking along Dickson Road in Blackpool town centre when she was approached by a man who dragged her down an alleyway and robbed her before committing a vicious sex attack.

Detectives today said the man pushed her into the alleyway and against a wall, produced a knife and demanded cash. She gave him some money, at which point he sexually assaulted her before fleeing the scene.

The incident happened some time between 5am and 6am on Monday but officers have only today issued a description of the man they are looking for.

Det Insp Tony Baxter, of Blackpool CID, told The Gazette: “This was a terrifying assault on a young woman and we have a team of detectives working to trace the person responsible.

“I would urge anyone who either recognises the description of this man or who saw anything at all suspicious in the area, to come forward and contact us – the smallest piece of information could be crucial.

“I would like to reassure people that as a result, we have increased police patrols in the area.”

The man is described as white, in his early to mid 20s with dark brown hair and dark eyes. He was wearing a black scarf over his face, a black hooded top, white trainers and black gloves.

Anyone with information can contact police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
