Police patrols have been stepped up after a 14-year-old boy was sexually assaulted in the grounds of a Blackpool church.

Detectives are appealing for information following the incident between midnight and 1am on Sunday after the boy had left a house party in Marton.

He was walking alone along Common Edge Road near, to the Highfield pub, where he met a man who has engaged him in conversation.

The victim walked with the man towards Our Lady of the Assumption RC Church where he was sexually assaulted.

His attacker is described as white, aged in his mid-30s and around 5ft 9in to 5ft 10in tall. He had a large stomach, short black and grey spiked hair and stubble and was wearing a blue and white horizontal striped jumper, dark trousers and shoes and spoke with a local accent.

Det Ins Nick Connaughton from Blackpool CID said: “We believe the man involved is local and may have been drinking or socialising in area prior to the incident.”
