TWO men were today set to appear in court charged with murder after a man was found dead on Blackpool beach.

Colin Dugdale, 27, of Lytham Road, South Shore, and Paul Thompson, 43, of Woodfield Road, Blackpool, were arrested after the grim discovery was made in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The body of a local man, believed to be in his 40s, was found on the sands opposite the Lyndene Hotel, between South and Central piers, at around 4am.

Police have so far not named the dead man as they continue to attempt to trace his family.

A post mortem was carried out on Saturday and revealed the man “died of injuries consistent with being beaten.”

Three men were arrested and were questioned throughout the weekend.

Dugdale and Thompson were both charged with murder and will appear before Blackpool Magistrates Court today.

A third man was released without charge.

Police have been conducting door-to-door inquiries at hotels on the busy stretch of Promenade and have been asking to see any CCTV footage from the surrounding area.

Today hoteliers spoke of their shock.

Tony Jones from The Lyric Hotel said: “I’m very surprised about this as my bedroom faces over the beach and I didn’t hear a thing in the night.”

Nath Hutchinson from The Gainsborough Hotel said: “I hadn’t heard a thing about this but it is a shock to hear something like this has happened on your doorstep.

“I expect police forensic teams were in quickly and away again before anybody was even up and about on Saturday morning.”

Prior to the charges being made Det Chief Insp Andrea Barrow appealed for members of the public to come forward with any information.

Police are now in the process of trying to contact the relatives of the dead man.

Anyone with information is urged to call Blackpool Police on the force’s non-emergency number 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
