Police were called to Lytham Road, close to the junction with Bloomfield Road, after a silver VW Beetle demolished a phonebox and smashed into a traffic light.

Officers found the car to be empty after the driver fled the crash, but arrested somebody nearby on suspicion of a slew of offences.

A spokeswoman for Lancashire Police was unable to immediately find any further details on the crash, including what time it happened or the specifics of the arrest, but pictures taken at the scene at around 2.20am clearly show the damage caused.

Glass and debris – including the car’s windscreen wipers – were left scattered across the junction after the badly-damaged Beetle ploughed into the street furniture.

And the phonebox was left almost unrecognisable, with the traffic light at a 45 degree angle.
