A new mum was fined after a council official saw her kick a chip carton.

Claire Whatmough picked up the carton and put it in her own bin after being confronted by the official at a park near her home, but was still given an £80 fixed penalty ticket.

She was recovering from a caesarian birth and with a new baby to care for forgot to pay the fine in time, ending up in court.

Whatmough, 41, of Crossland Road, Marton, Blackpool, pleaded guilty to littering and was fined £35 with £20 victims’ surcharge by Blackpool magistrates.

Whatmough said there were two takeaways in the area. She said she and other residents had repeatedly complained to the council about fly-tipping at the back of their homes.

When she went into her back garden there was rubbish there. She picked up a lot of it and put it in her bin, but in temper kicked a chip carton out of her gate.
