A man stole to fund a train ticket to go to the anniversary reunion of his mother’s murder, a magistrates’ court was told.

Stephen Smith was desperate to reunite with his four brothers and two sisters on the occasion marking 10 years since their mum was killed a judge was told.

Smith, 49, of Walter Robinson Court, Layton, pleaded guilty to theft.

He was fined £35 and ordered to pay £85 costs by District Judge Joanne Hirst sitting at Blackpool Magistrates’ Court.

Martine Connah, prosecuting, said Smith was caught stealing 22 chocolate bars valued at £22 from Morrisons, Church Street, Blackpool on April 4.

At first he claimed to have bought the chocolate elsewhere, but then admitted he had stolen it from there.
